Classifications of film 8 February 09

Here I mean not so much genres but classifications of film content. I imagine there are some doctoral theses on this and maybe I will look into that sometime.

First list of classifications

  • assassin films
  • gangster films
  • cop films
  • love films
  • progressive films and films of radical style
  • pseudo progressive films (“art films”)

The last category includes pretentious film-makers like W. Allen, what’s his name, the guy who did Down By Law, and many more (check if they were awarded a prize by the Sundance Film Festival).

The second-to-last category is the most important for me and includes works which help us see, think, and feel. At the top of the list are the Straubs →, Godard →, Chaplin →, and some more, inluding, by the way, Tarantino → (who embraces all of the above categories, as does Godard of course).

These are the first categories or classification which come to mind, perhaps I’ll come back to this.
