Masterpieces of the Department of Prints and Drawings 7 April 08

This was stunning, and all from the permanent collection, though I hadn’t seen any of these before.

Pieces I loved seeing:

  • A beautiful, simple charcoal drawing of a cup with a spoon in it by Picasso;
  • A watercolor by Cézanne of the allée of Chestnut trees at Jas de Bouffan, the one behind the house. It was done from about where the second photo is in this page, which is just past where the fourth photo was taken (photos made when we were in Aix for the remarkable Cézanne exhibition in 2006);
  • There was a charcoal drawing by van Gogh from 1885 of a peasant picking potatoes: despite the glass frame I could almost smell the coal and potato dust;
  • There were two John Cage pencil drawings;
  • There was a lovely Hockney drawing of Eugene and Henry (Henry Geldzahler);
  • And two Max Beckmann drawings, one from 1914 and one from 1944.
