Jan de Cock: Denkmal 7 7 August 05

The centerpiece of his exhibition was powerful and evocative for me. It is a large construction just outside the museum, a kind of building. It looks like something that can be entered but it cannot. It is made of pressboard with a linoleum veneer, the kind of boards you would find in inexpensive housing, in the kitchens for example, or in schools. But only in the interiors. And the building was outside with an open roof and subjected to the weather, which can be rainy here. The impact of the weather, the water, is strong and gives off the scents of the linoleum and board and of moisture and light transforming materials that were not meant for that kind of exposure to the elements. It resonated strongly in me, touching on childhood feelings.
