Etymology of child

Child n. About 1175 child, developed from Old English cild (about 750, in Cynewulf’s Elene). Old English cild is cognate with Old Swedish kulder, kolder litter (modern Swedish and Norwegian kull), Danish kuld offspring, brood, Gothic kilthei womb, inkilthõ pregnant, and Sanskrit jathára-n belly, (from Indo-European *gel-t-/gl-t-, Pok.358), but Old Frisian, Old Saxon and Old High German kind child, offspring, is a form not satisfactorily related to Old English cild.
The original Old English nominative plural was the same as the singular cild, but about 975 the plural cildru (genetive cildra) developed, which became children, about 1175, through influence of the plural ending -en, as in brethren. (From Chambers Dictionary of Etymology)

Etymology of youth

Youth n. Probably about 1150 youhthe; developed from Old English geoguth youth (about 725, in Beowulf; related to geong YOUNG. Old English geoguth is cognate with Old Frisian jogethe youth. Old Saxon juguth, Middle Dutch joghet, jöghet (modern Dutch jeugd), and Old High German jugend (modern German Jugend).
