During the week I finished viewing the ten films in the DVD set The Decalogue, which was a gift to me.
The films use the Judeo-Christian myth of the “ten commandments” as a starting point to present people from diverse walks of life struggling to find their moral, ethical and emotional bearings.
The narrative of each film reaches some sort of meaningful emotional or moral denouement, but for me the high moral integrity and sober beauty of the films lie even more in the deeply serious, thoughtful and structured approach of the filmmakers to the themes.
The first of the ten films remains the most powerful for me (photo).
