I recently→ expressed my feelings about Dennis Hopper, now he has died.A few weeks ago I watched Easy Rider → again — I have no idea how many times I have in fact seen that film. It has a kind of perfection, the perfection of creating something right, something that just works, that just resonates. In its directness and innocence it has a raw and amateur quality, Hopper was wielding the camera freely and lovingly.
Hopper’s portrayal of Billy (as in Billy-the-Kid, Fonda playing Wyatt, as in Wyatt Earp), his direction of himself, is seamless. It is almost impossible for me to simultaneously be aware of him as Billy, as the actor portraying Billy, and the director directing him and Fonda, not to mention Nicholson.
Otherwise Hopper is an actor. As I said in a previous entry (below, with a permalink above): I love how Dennis Hopper speaks, moves, looks, and acts. I love all of his roles,...

I love how Dennis Hopper speaks, moves, looks, and acts. I love all of his roles, including the ones where he was young and I sometimes sense how he felt intimidated by his co-actors, such as his role in The Sons of Katie Elder (see my comments &rarr John Wayne (a terribly underestimated personality and actor, in my opinion), as well in Rebel Without a Cause, with James Dean.
And of course there are the films Easy Rider (&rarr) and Der amerikanische Freund (see my previous entry here in acoolsha.org).
His role as Victor Drazen (en.wikipedia.org → Season one of 24 ) is acerbic and unforgettable.
I am thinking of him and rewatching the films I have available while concerned about his failing health now in Los Angeles.

Hard to believe that it’s been almost exactly five years since I last watched this film, two times in fact, after I bought the DVD. Of course I had also seen it a number of times before, going back to when it first came out.
This time I could relate more deeply to the psychology of the characters, in the sense that I see art differently through my own growth. I imagine that Wenders also sees this film somewhat differently over time.
My thoughts on the film here in acoolsha still hold up, though, again, it resonates on an emotional level like never before.
